How Sleep Cycles Work

Sleep occurs in cycles of approximately 90 minutes each, moving through different stages from light sleep to deep sleep and REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. Waking up at the end of a complete sleep cycle, during light sleep, makes it easier to wake up feeling refreshed and alert.

Our calculator helps you time your sleep to complete full cycles, taking into account the average time it takes to fall asleep. Most adults need 5-6 complete sleep cycles per night for optimal rest.
